ITANAGAR : In order to alleviate the downstream impact of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, the Centre has approved downstream development package of Rs 470 crore. This was recommended by the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) to mitigate the downstream impact of the 2000MW Subansiri project.

As per sources, the total sanctioned amount has been divided for different purposes. Rs 145 crores is sanctioned for the protection of Subansiri river bank and erosion control measures. The distance will be up to 30 km. Rs 5 crores has been assigned for public awareness and social awakening programmes. The remaining Rs 320 crores will be funded for the development purpose in downstream areas.

According to the NHPC statements, the identified sectors initially were Sericulture, Piggery, Handloom, Dairy, Poultry, Handicraft, Agriculture and Horticulture. This was based upon the survey conducted by the Institute Of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA), Gujarat. NHPC ltd acted as the consultant for designing and strategising implementation of viable living standards in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur district.

The NHPC statement further added that, NHPC ltd has been working on the scheme in sectors such as Sericulture, Piggery and Handloom with all the women of Dhemaji and Lakhimpur district. They have been implementing these since 2018.

On 25th of November 2022, NHPC has taken a stride towards the upliftment of Livelihood Intervention as a part of its developmental work in Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. The foundation stone of the Common Facility Centre for SAAR Pig Producer company, was laid by Vipin Kumar, the Executive Director in the presence of Chief Executive councillor of Missing Autonomous Council, Paramananda Chayengia. SAAR is a part of the downstream developmental initiative by NHPC with 2500 women in it.

During the occasion, Vipin Kumar assured the gathering that, NHPC will work towards the all-round upliftment and development of the people. Paramanada Chayengia recognised and appriciated the NHPC for its initiatives and assured every sort of assistance in the process.
