Shillong: In a major political development in Meghalaya, the former chief minister of the state Mukul Sangma is likely to join the Trinamool Congress along with a dozen of Congress MLAs soon.

Sources said that around 13 Congress MLAs are likely to join TMC along with Sangma.

According to sources, the announcement is expected to be made sometime in the next couple of days, possibly on or after 2 October.

While it was reported that Sangma met TMC MP and the party's general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee on 21 September. However, party sources say that the two are yet to have a meeting.

Earlier, newly elected MPCC (Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee) chief, Vincent H. Pala said that he wants to be transparent in his journey as the president of MPCC. Commenting on the absence of senior Congressman and leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma at the charge-taking ceremony, Pala said that he will go and meet him. On the absence of Congress legislators from the Garo Hills during the ceremony Pala said, "The legislators in Garo Hills are mainly Mukul's family members and friends. So, naturally if he is not there, others will be not be there. It is an open fact," the new MPCC chief said. However, Pala said that Congress MLA from Mendipathar, Marathon Sangma was present when RG Lyngdoh and PN Syiem rejoined the party on September 16 and also on Saturday when former legislator Deborah Marak did the same.

He also said that the leader of Opposition used to be his dear friend. "I always consider him to be the boss in the party and as a friend," he added. Meanwhile, AICC in-charge Meghalaya -- Manish Chatrath also praised Dr Sangma.
