As per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, NPD is an everlasting mental health disorder that appears in the form of an unrealistic sense of self-importance, finding difficulty in creating meaningful relationships, having a strong sense of mercilessness and a constant need for admiration from others.

Causes of Narcissism

According to psychologists and other research, the root of this behaviour can be traced from childhood trauma, genetics or abuse inclusive of verbal and sexual. As per a study conducted in 2015, people with such personalities possess parents who overvalued their status and achievements. Even so, parents with compassionate and warm parenting techniques lead their children to have healthy self-esteem which educates them to treat themselves as valuable and not superior.

How to Respond

It has been highly challenging to deal with a person possessing narcissistic traits. However, there are certain steps which can be endeavoured to keep a healthy relationship with them. A person can define his or her boundaries with them by less interaction and limited gathering. He or she can also limit the amount of discussion regarding his or her personal life.

Individuals going through such mental condition has been advised to speak to a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist at the earliest. It is recommended to consult the concerned doctors when the following signs are apparent:

Physical abuse such as kicking, hitting or scratching

Emotional abuse such as guilt-tripping or manipulation

Financial abuse such as controlling the money of somebody else's

Verbal abuse such as yelling, insults or threats
