Bird flu is also known as avian flu is an infection that occurs most significantly in birds but some strains of it affect humans such as H7N9 and H5N1.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when this infection spreads to humans, it results in serious illness.

The transmission of Bird flu occurs in humans when these viruses that are part of the avian influenza A viruses from the saliva or mucus of an infected bird travels into the nose, mouth or eyes of a person.

The virus can be found in air droplets and when a person breathes the virus he/she becomes infected with it. The virus is also transformed from person to person in some rare cases.

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS:

Bird flu mainly spread when a person gets in contact with domestic poultry and wild birds like turkey, chickens, and ducks among others.

If a person touches the contaminated surface of any such birds, there is a high risk that he/she might get infected but the virus can also occur without any direct connection with the birds.

Bird flu also spreads in Open-air markets as birds and eggs can be sold in unsanitary conditions. People also get affected by viruses by eating undercooked poultry that was associated with influenza.

People with weak immune systems and adults over the age of 65 are at high risk of getting affected with Bird flu. Pregnant women also need to be much careful in this regard as there is a high chance for them of associating with the infection.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:

According to WHO (World Health Organization), the symptoms of the infection are visible within 2 days after the person is affected.

1. Fever greater than 100.4 degrees F 38 degrees Celsius.

2. Sore throat

3. Conjunctivitis

4. Headaches

5. Fatigue

6. Cough

7. Difficulty in breathing

8. Vomiting and Nausea

9. Bleeding from gums and nose

10. Muscle aches

11. Abdominal pain

12. Diarrhea

Medications for the treatment of Bird flu:

1. Relenza (zanamivir)

2. Tamiflu (oseltamivir)

3. Rapivab (peramivir)
