NEW DELHI: Delhi Government has taken a very bold step in banning all types of Firecracker production till January 2023 which means no firecrackers would be entertained in the National capital ahead of the Festive season of Dussehra and Diwali.

The step has been taken by the Delhi government to prevent air pollution during the festive season of Dussehra and Diwali which is celebrated with great pomp and show in the National capital. Firecrackers are a very important part of these celebrations but not this year.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said in a statement on Wednesday that the ban on the production, storage, and distribution of firecrackers will remain till January 1, 2023, and a comprehensive plan will be chalked out with the help of Delhi police and other departments of the Union territory government to make this ban a success.

Rai also added that this decision to ban firecrackers was taken in 2021 itself in a party meeting.

"This has been done to save the lives of the people of Delhi and to prevent air and sound pollution", the minister added.

Delhi is much greener than all the metro cities, then why does it struggle for a whiff of fresh air every year?

There are geographical and some economical factors related to this, one is Delhi's landlocked position and the other is that Delhi has the highest cluster of small-scale industries in India and it is seen that most of these industries do not meet the limits on air, water, and soil emissions.

Delhi has been ranked the most polluted city in the world as per a global analysis of air quality.

Delhi topped the list of 7000 cities in the world in terms of pollution according to a report by Air Quality and Health in Cities.

The Air Quality and Health in Cities report, published by the State of Global Air, is a collaboration between the US-based Health Effects Institute (HEI) and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation's Global Burden of Disease Project.

The Delhi government's move to ban firecracker production till January 2023 is surely going to give relief to Delhi's lungs.
