DELHI: FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) on Wednesday suspended the licenses of 15 food business operators in the country for non-compliance with the regulations regarding the display of nutritional values in their menus.

Among 500 food business operators in the country, FSSAI found 71 cases of non-compliance with the rules and regulations.

FSSAI also warned food delivery giants Zomato and Swiggy earlier this month for showing disinterest in the rules and regulations set by FSSAI.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India(FSSAI) came out with the labelling and display of food items in 2020 which was put into effect from July 1 this year.

These regulations prescribe the labelling requirements of pre-packaged foods and display essential information on premises where food is manufactured, processed, served, and stored.

As per these regulations, food service establishments having central licenses or having outlets at 10 or more locations are required to mention the calorific value against the food items displayed on the menu or the booklets. They need to provide information related to nutrition, allergen, and ingredients among others.

Notably, in 2020 a Tamil Nadu sweet shop owner claimed that there was a sweet in his shop which could cure the Covid-19 virus. Upon learning about this, FSSAI took swift action and cancelled the license of the shop.

A few years back Patanjali products also were put on the radar of FSSAI for quality issues and for false advertising. The end result is still not known.

There are a host of products that do not comply with the quality norms and only by the dint of advertising is minting crores and crores of money from gullible Indians. FSSAI with this kind of strictness can lessen the amount of sub-par products from the market and help people from getting thugged by advertisements.

Around 70 Food Business Operators have sought time from FSSAI for compliance.
