MADURAI: Joymala, an elephant that was allegedly tortured at a temple in Tamil Nadu, has become the bone of contention between the Assam and Tamil Nadu governments. Tamil Nadu Government was adamant about not letting the four-member Assam team meet Joymala.

Following the continuous refusal by the Tamil Nadu government to let the Assam team meet Joymala, the Assam government moved the Gauhati High Court seeking custody of the elephant.

The Gauhati High Court on Friday instructed the Tamil Nadu government to let the 4 member Assam team meet Joymala and also ensure the team's safety.

The four-member team that was sent by Assam Government to Tamil Nadu to enquire about the elephant Joymala flew to Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

"Our team has experts who will examine under what conditions Joymala has been kept and depending on that we will have a talk with the government about the custody" Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Assam MK Yadava said in a statement.

Two members of the team- Superintendent of Police Morigaon district, Aparna Natarajan and a renowned veterinarian of Assam KK Sarma who came back to Assam after they were denied a meeting by the Tamil Nadu on September 3 will be flying to Madurai and after that will take a 70 km long road trip in order to meet Joymala in Srivilliputhur temple which comes under Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu.

KK Sarma in a statement said, "The Assam government after the order by Gauhati High Court has instructed us to visit the temple and enquire about the well-being of Joymala. We are rushing to Madurai via Chennai and the other two members of our team will meet in Madurai and then we will take a 70 km long road trip in order to reach the temple to see in what condition she is kept and if we find that she is actually being ill-treated which the Tamil Nadu government is denying we will ask the Tamil Nadu government for her custody"
