ITANAGAR: During the recently concluded trekking expedition, which was led by the Siang District Deputy Commissioner Atul Tayeng, District Land Revenue and Settlement Officer (DLRSO) Obang Mibang and his team, the elusive Kaisher-i-hind butterfly, one of the rarest Butterfly in the world, was sighted at an altitude of 1800 metres in Luyor Pass.

The Kaiser-i- hind (Teinopalpus imperialis) is a rare species of swallowtail butterfly and means "emperor of India".

Tayeng told the reporters that such sightings in some habitats indicate a pristine healthy habitat for the species to survive and shall boost butterfly tourism in Siang and Upper Siang District.

He said during the trekking to Luyor Pass, the team visited Payum and Gaseng village under Payum Circle. The trek which started from Migging village under Upper Siang District on 24 May culminated at Molo village of Siang District was aimed at obtaining first-hand knowledge of the problems faced by the people of the unconnected villages of Payum, Gatte, Gaseng, Gaming under Payum Circle.

Further, the trek also aimed to take stock of the 72 km final road alignment survey of the proposed Bille-Migging road connecting Payum circle under Siang district with Migging circle of Upper Siang District which has been approved recently.

"Migging section of the road has been constructed a few years earlier covering a distance of 22 km. Payum circle is one of the oldest circles of the state and is more than 50 years old," he said.

The circle was established way back in the mid-60s but to date, most of the villages under the circle are devoid of modern surface communication and modern basic amenities.

"We crossed over the mountain ranges comprising of Belak, Keteng, Luyor, Derging, and Sirging and visited James point. A monolith stone erected by the then Assistant Political Officer, Siang valley, sub-agency P.L.S James marks the official boundary between Siang and Upper Siang District in Luyor pass," he added.
