Assam: Eviction Drive In Kokrajhar Conducted By The Railways

GUWAHATI: The Alipurduar division of NF Railways conducted an eviction drive at Kokrajhar district in Assam on Monday, according to Railway sources.

The source informed that the NF Railway conducted the drive against clubs, shops and various business establishments for illegally encroaching on railway land in Shantinagar area of Kokrajhar.

It is significant to note that, three months ago, the Railways issued an eviction notice to illegal encroachers and the eviction drive was conducted under tight security as the occupiers ignored the notice.

According to sources, as many as 75 shops will be evicted in the stretch from Shantinagar to Tengapara in Kokrajhar, which the occupiers have been encroaching upon and the land will be developed by the Railways itself.

To prevent any untoward incident taking place, Government Railway Police, Assam Police and Central Reserve Police Force were deployed in the area.

"The eviction drive is not being carried out by the administration but by the railway authorities. The land under question is under divisional railway of Alipurduar. There was an announcement three months back and another just one and half months ago. All due process for the eviction is being followed", said a Railways official.

"All unauthorized structures in the area are being evicted. There are several structures in this area, including clubs. We had announced several times all around Kokrajhar about the eviction drive and the date when it will be done", he further added.

The official also informed that development work by the Railways will be done at the site. The Railway authorities had issued notices as well as made announcements about the eviction and when it will be done. Keeping to the schedule drawn up, the eviction drive began at around 10.30 AM today, he added.
