Assam: Gauhati High Court Grants Interim Bail to Victor Das

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court on Friday granted interim bail to Victor Das.

Victor was arrested on September 9 on charges of spreading rumours in the name of a scam in a government recruitment process. The court has granted him interim bail till September 29.

Previously, Das alleged that a ring is demanding bribes from Rs 3-5 lakhs from each candidate for 'backdoor appointment'.

Victor Das runs two coaching institutes in Guwahati, one at Rajgarh and the other at Maligaon, both of which are named Swardemy. Victor also provides online coaching to aspirants through a Youtube channel.

Victor had tagged state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Special DGP GP Singh in a Twitter post, which said, "Respected Sir, a huge lobby is running for the backdoor appointment of the recently held ADRE exams where people are demanding money from 3 lakhs to 8 lakhs depending on the post, also a few ex-MLA is involved. Please help."

He was later arrested for spreading misinformation. However upon interrogation, that Das could not furnish any relevant proof of the information that he had circulated over social media, police had said.

DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta later addressed the media and said, "Victor Das couldn't provide viable information on the matter and has misinterpreted the facts."

The police had also raided the residence of Victor Das at Dadara village in Hajo of Kamrup district and seized his laptop.

Few of his students were subsequently questioned by the police. They later disclosed that phone numbers, from which they had received calls for money in lieu of jobs, and chat screenshots were hande over to the police.

In a related incident a day later, seven brokers offering jobs for cash were apprehended from a lodge in the Borbari area of the city. Fake appointment letters for posts in the Water Resources department were also seized from them, police later said.
