GUWAHATI: In an unfortunate incident, a girl committed suicide by jumping in front of a running train in Assam's Boko on Friday evening .

According to sources, it has been found out that the deceased committed suicide due to love affair issues.

One of the locals said, "The girl eloped with Priyadev Rabha on Thursday however, the boy's family refused to accept their alliance. The next day either the boy's mother or sister came to drop her half way. The girl lost all hopes and jumped in front of the train."

Meanwhile, the police have arrested Priyadev Rabha in connection to the suicide death.

Earlier, another incident of suicide occured on 16 July, 2022 where the body of an unidentified woman was found on the railway track near the Asomiya Pratidin-Sadin building in Guwahati's Chandmari area.

According to witnesses at the site of the incident, the woman, expected to be in her mid-30s, jumped in front of the moving train, in a case of suspected suicide.

She was hit by a moving train that was coming from the Chandmari side.

The inhabitants of the area couldn't identify her as a resident of the area.

The deceased is dark-complexioned, has tied up curly hair, and is a short-built woman draped in a green saree and orange blouse.

The railway police officials rushed to the site to investigate the matter.

Another suicide occurred on 6 June, 2022, where A 16-year-old HSLC candidate from Tangla town in Udalguri district of Assam allegedly committed suicide after failing to clear the exams conducted by SEBA. The girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train at Hahinigaon village near Tangla town in Udalguri district of Assam on Tuesday evening.

The deceased girl student has been identified as Jemy Sarania.

"We have recovered the body of the girl and sent it for post-mortem to Udalguri civil hospital," a Tangla GRP official informed.

Pertinently, the victim was a promising dancer and model and had participated in a number of fashion shows in a number of places.

Notably, as per police records, in 2018 Assam recorded 2,310 cases of suicide. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) figures said the state recorded 2,370 suicide cases in 2019, which increased by 36.8% to 3,243 in 2020. While NCRB is yet to release data for 2021, Assam police recorded 3,302 suicide deaths last year—of them 2,391 were men and 911 women.

The state's biggest city, Guwahati, recorded the highest numbers of suicide deaths. From 222 such deaths in 2013, the figures have steadily increased and last year 414 suicides were recorded in the city. This year, already more than 400 such deaths have been recorded in the first six months itself.

In order to prevent suicide cases in the state, the Guwahati police have provided counselling to help people with mental issues with two helpline numbers, 6026900574 and 6026900552, where people can reach out and get help and advice from experts.
