Assam: Gohpur Farmers Portray Poor Picture Of Governments Failed Initiatives

GOHPUR: Poor farmer from Assam's Gohpur Town made the allegation on Friday, claiming that the Assam Agriculture Department's distribution of low-quality black lentil seeds has severely impacted the farmers' ability to produce and earn money, leaving them in a terrible state.

A farmer was seen breaking down into tears. The report says that the farmer took a loan from the bank and cultivated the seeds but the Seeds were not sown properly as the quality of the seeds was not good and the farmers blamed the government for providing low-quality seeds for cultivation which did not allow proper growth of the seeds.

Over the years, numerous cases of farmers losing output, reportedly as a result of the seeds' poor quality, have been documented. However, the lack of a compensation mechanism in the Seed Act of 1966, Seed Rules, and Seed Control Order 1983 means that the impacted farmers have little prospect of receiving assistance.

Because of this, no appellate or nodal authority could be established to choose the appropriate level of compensation in cases involving seed quality.

False seeds are proliferating in various parts of the country due to a lack of government oversight and sample inspections. Farmers are suffering losses as a result of poor germination and flowering, even when using seeds provided by authorized agencies.

In Asia, poor seed quality is a significant issue. Poor vigor, illnesses, and weeds introduced into the seed all lower yields.

B.C. Patil, the minister of agriculture, previously warned that seed companies would face repercussions if they failed to compensate farmers for the poor quality of their seeds.

After holding a review meeting with officials, the Minister told the media that he had instructed them to make sure that, regardless of the seed company concerned, compensation should be given to farmers, if they had suffered loss as a result of poor-quality seeds that had failed to germinate.
