Assam Govt and IIT-G to Conduct India's First 'Village Planning' in 2 Kamrup Villages
The state government in collaboration with the IIT-Guwahati has picked two villages from Kamrup (rural) district to carry out India's first ever 'Village Planning'
GUWAHATI : For the first time ever, the state government has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati to carry out the concept of 'Planning of Villages'. According to IIT-Guwahati Director, TG Sitharam, rural development is not a complimentary task. In order to make India an economically superior country, the state needs to improve the circumstances of the villages. Their issues must be rectified and resolved first.
He continued by saying that, new concepts has been inculcated in the process of development of the villages and it has very less resemblance with the early ways and methods. This is to be carried out by the town planning or city planning. Sitharam was present at the University of Science and Technology (USTM), where the department of rural development and USTM with the assistance from the Indian Council of Social Science Research organized a training and learning program for the faculty of social sciences.
He further mentions that IIT- Guwahati has picked two villages as a starter from the Kamrup (Rural) district of Assam. They are currently planning to work on these two villages. The state is looking for chief spots or properties in the selected village areas, surveys are also conducted regarding solid waste management and water supplies to the households, said the Director.
He shared that, the idea of framing the villages in a newer form has its short term goal as well as a long term goal. The short term planning ends in 5 years and the long term planning is for 25 years. This is for the first time that India is seeing village planning process, so as a beginner only 20 villages has been sorted out by the IITs, Ministry of Panchayat Raj and 10 schools of planning. People have to emphasize more on 'social entrepreneurship' in a larger scale. Sitharam also encourages the people from humanities background to come up with ideas that could possibly resolve certain issues.
