Guwahati: The Nagaon Police has apprehended the mastermind and the prime accused in the Batadrava arson incident with the assistance of Darrang police on the night of May 26.

The prime accused has been identified as Alauddin and the police have detained him for setting ablaze the Batadrava police station.

Alauddin reportedly disappeared from Batadrava after torching the police station and went underground immediately after he was identified by the police from the video footage.

A team of Nagaon police arrived at Darrang on May 26 following which they launched a massive manhunt with the help of Dhula police to capture Alauddin.

The accused tried to evade but the police were able to catch him from the Mousida area under Dhula police station in Darrang district after chasing him for around six kilometres.

However, reports stated that this was not the first offence committed by Alauddin and he has had a track record of committing offences in the past. It includes his involvement in the drug trade and several cases of dacoities. The police have said that he has many cases pending against him at the Batadrava police station. Alauddin will be shifted to Nagaon from Darrang on May 27.

Earlier, a violent and rowdy crowd set ablaze the Batadrava police station in the Nagaon district of Assam on May 21 and they had also physically assaulted the cops.

The assault came after a person, who was allegedly picked up by police, reportedly died while in custody at Batadrava police station.

The Batadrava police had picked up Safiqul Islam of Salnabari under the Dhing police station on the night of May 20. His family accused the cops of demanding Rs 10,000 and a duck for his release.

Safiqul allegedly died in police custody and his family found his body at the local hospital on May 21.
