GUWAHATI: In Assam's Nagaon district on Thursday, an under-construction bridge collapsed, leaving at least three workers with severe wounds.

The tragedy occurred at the under-construction Kopili bridge in the Kampur neighbourhood of Nagaon. The three workers were sent to the hospital in critical condition right away.

There may be more workers who have been tapped under the bridge, it is said. The locals, meanwhile, said that the bridge was built with subpar materials and workmanship. Once the bridge fell, every worker employed by the bridge's contractor left the area.

The incident has generated controversy among the residents. We don't know if someone is trapped beneath the bridge's ruins. To assess the situation, nobody has yet shown up. Also, the contractor's subcontractors have left.” mentioned a local person.

Incidentally, the news was released just after Assam's finance minister, Ajanta Neog, announced a number of new government-funded infrastructure projects in the state that would be finished this year. A number of significant flyovers are also included in the projects, and they are expected to wrap up this year.

In another incident, a four wheeler vehicle crashed head-on with a dump truck on NH 37 in Saringia, in the Jorhat district of Assam, resulting in one person's death and three others suffering critical injuries.

The injured have been admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).

"Eyewitnesses told us that the car travelling from the direction of Jorhat hit a sand-carrying dumper here head-on, killing one person on the spot," the police told the media.

"The dump truck was driving on the wrong side of the street. When the collision occurred, both cars were moving quickly," police noted. The victims are natives of Golaghat. They are now registered patients at the JMCH.
