Assam: Police Apprehend 12 Land Mafias In Connection With Murder Case

Guwahati: Assam Police on Monday apprehended 12 land mafias from Bilasipara under Assam's Dhubri district in connection with a murder case.
As per reports, the prime accused named Sultan Ali was the first to be arrested following which others accused were nabbed.
Reportedly, these land mafias were allegedly involved in the murder of one Sapiluddin Sheikh, who was brutally thrashed to death by them in Beltoli area of Bilasipara on August 21.
However, the identities of the other 12 arrestees are yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the matter to nab other persons involved in it the murder case.
Significantly, as many as 496 murder cases were registered across the State in the six-month period between January 1 and June 30 this year, with the Sonitpur district topping the list with 38 murders.
According to Assam Police sources, other districts with high numbers of murder cases are Tinsukia (34), Dibrugarh (29), Cachar (25), Nagaon and Kamrup (24 each), Charaideo and Dhubri (21 each), Barpeta (20), Jorhat (17) and Kokrajhar (15).
On the other hand, Dima Hasao and Sadiya registered only one murder each, while Majuli and West Karbi Anglong registered two murders each during this period.
The Barpeta Police Station registered the highest number of 10 murder cases between January and June this year. Police sources said that not a single murder case was registered in more than 16 police stations of the State.
The sources added that seven murder cases were registered under the jurisdiction of the Government Railway Police (GRP).
It may be mentioned that during the January-June period of 2020, a total of 626 murder cases had been registered in the State. While official data has not been uploaded on the relevant website, the police sources said that as many as 1,185 murders were registered overall in the State during 2021.
