Guwahati: In a major bust in recent times, police in Guwahati seized a huge consignment of suspected morphine, believed to be worth around Rs 8 crores, at Guwahati Railway Station on Friday.

Two people into taken into custody in connection with the major bust , according to official sources.

The seized stash of drugs, suspected to be morphine, weighed a total of 2.042 kilograms and is believed to be worth around Rs 8 crores in international market.

Sources also informed that the consignment was being smuggled from Tinsukia to Guwahati, when it was intercepted and seized.

Meanwhile, the two arrested individuals are currently under interrogation by the police. A formal investigation into the incident has been initiated, a police source said.

In its continued efforts to curb the drugs menace in the state, Assam police had seized large quantities of narcotic substances and detained several people in three separate busts on Aug 26.

Karimganj police seized large quantities of cannabis and detained four people in this connection, while acting on a tip- off provided by an informant.

Based on that information, officials laid a trap on the Assam – Tripura state border at Kathaltali near Chandkhira in the Karimganj district.

The smugglers walked straight into the trap and as much as 73 kilograms of marijuana was seized during the operation, while four people were arrested on charges of drug smuggling, police said. The seized cannabis is worth close to Rs 7 lakhs, they further informed.

On the same day, in a separate bust at Lumding in Hojai district of Assam, police launched an anti-drugs operation and caught a drug addict, identified as Biswajit Das alias Manki, red-handed with a quantity of drugs. Police said that around 6.10 grams of brown sugar was recovered from his possession. The addict was.

In yet another drug bust in Nagaon on that day, police detained two narcotics smugglers from Batadrava. Nagaon police launched operations at Lalung gaon and Bhetiani Gaon in Batadrava, detained two persons and seized 3 grams of drugs and 468 grams of marijuana from their possession.

Such successful operations by Assam Police has come as a shot in the arm for the war on drugs in the state.
