Guwahati: Several police personnel and an undertrial prisoner were injured when a police van lost control and fell off a bridge on Wednesday morning, in Goalpara district of Assam

The accident was reported to have occurred in Dudhnoi area of the district.

Six police personnel including women were in the van beside the undertrial who was picked up from Meghalaya's West Garo Hills.

It was found that the driver was sleep-deprived and had dozed off for a split second, leading to the accident.

Subsequently, all the injured were admitted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The police van, which fell into a pond, was also pulled out with the help of a crane.

Another such accident occurred on June 19 where a speeding police escort vehicle of state agriculture minister Atul Bora hit the youth after losing control killing a youth of Samaguri named Manash Pratim Das, , sources said at that time, adding that the minister was coming from Guwahati to Kaliabor.

The driver and other occupants of the escort vehicle were also injured in the accident. The youth, who was injured grievously in the incident, was immediately brought to Nagaon BP Civil Hospital in a very critical condition where the on-duty doctor of the hospital declared him dead.

Again, an incident occurred on June 5 2022 where a police vehicle attached to the Bhangagarh Police Station rammed into a private car and a scooter in the Sijubari area of Hatigaon in Guwahati .

Later it was discovered that the driver of the police vehicle was inebriated and was subsequently arrested for drunk driving. The person injured in the accident was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Eyewitnesses present at that time said the police vehicle was seen driving haphazardly before the accident.

The visibly drunk driver identified as Rakesh Ali, admitted to reporters later that the accident was 'his fault'. All three vehicles involved in the incident sustained damage.
