MORIGAON: Assam Police has been on their toes these days, making a bunch of arrests in the past two months. The Assam Police on Monday apprehended two individuals having alleged links to the banned Bangladesh outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). The arrested individuals have been identified as Musadik Hussain and Ikramul Islam, the Superintendent of Police Morigaon said in a statement.

The Assam Police last month apprehended two more individuals from Barpeta on August 28, who had links to Al-Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and ABT. They were engaging in Jihadi activities in the area and were allegedly influencing the youth of the area to join the outfit to fight for their cause.

The terrorist duo, identified as Akbar Ali and Abul Kalam Azad, were detained from a house in the Sorbhog area of Barpeta district.

The police also apprehended a Madrassa teacher from Goalpara on suspected links to AQIS and ABT.

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his concern for the growing Jihadi activities in the state and said, "Jihadi activity is very different from terrorist or insurgency activities. It starts with indoctrination for several years, followed by active participation in promoting Islamic fundamentalism, and finally going for subversive activities".

Assam has razed down three madrassas for their links to Jihadi activities.

The Assam CM's strong stand against the Jihadi activities has garnered praise from all corners of the country. Many opposition parties have, however, also compared him to Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath and said that the UP model of razing down Madrassas does not apply to Assam.

The Assam CM also added that the Bangladeshi nationals who entered the state illegally in 2016-17, operated several camps during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Only some of these Bangladeshis have been arrested so far, and I appeal to the people to inform the local police in case anybody from outside the state who becomes a teacher or an Imam in a madrasa," CM Sarma said in a statement.
