Dibrugarh: On Sunday a mortar shell was recovered by Dibrugarh Police near Bokpara Chariali which lies on the by-pass in Dibrugarh.

The mortal shell was first discovered by a local living in the area during his routine morning walk, as per the police.

However, the mortal which had brought the people of the area into a state of panic seems to very old and the metal on its exterior has rusted.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP-Headquarters) of Dibrugarh informed, "We have recovered the mortar shell from the by-pass in Dibrugarh. We have started an investigation into the matter."

"We suspect that someone kept the mortar shell in their house and after knowing that he would be charged by police for keeping mortar shell left it on the roadside of the by-pass," he added.

According to sources, the mortar shell is now being kept at Mancotta area. A bomb squad from the army will soon reach the site to deal with the mortar shell.

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) is believed have used the mortar shell against the security forces.

In other news, the Khoupum Battalion of the Assam Rifles that fall under the Spear Corps of the Indian Army has arrested 2 insurgents of the ZUF (J) militant outfit with the help of Manipur Police. The team of Spear Corps have also recovered war-like stores from the two insurgents.

This incident is said to have taken place at Nunggang in Kangpokbi village of Manipur on September 18. The two insurgents of the ZUF (J) are now under the custody of the Manipur police.
