AHRC Orders Probe into AASU's Complain of Police Atrocities in Dibrugarh
AASU took part in a sit-in protest at the Sadar police station in Dibrugarh, protesting police brutality against AASU activists and the desecration of the martyr's column.
Guwahati: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) directed the Dibrugarh district administration to examine allegations of police brutality involving activists of the All Assam Students' Union.
After taking suo-motu cognizance of the particular instance in light of media stories of alleged police misconduct against students in Dibrugarh, the Commission posted a notification to the local authority.
The AHRC has asked the Dibrugarh district government to provide a comprehensive description within one month. The AHRC had already been petitioned by AASU to register a suo-motu case.
The AASU conducted a sit-in demonstration at Dibrugarh's Sadar police station, condemning police violence towards AASU activists and the vandalism of the martyr's column.
Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Shwetank Mishra and his subordinates, according to AASU President Dipankar Kumar Nath, rushed on an AASU activist at the student body's district office and violated the martyr's column by treading over it with shoes.
As per the AHRC judgement, "it is further asserted that members of AASU were badly beaten up and exposed to inhuman torture throughout custody after they were detained on December 25 in conjunction with a college election-related altercation."
The AASU has been protesting since its members were detained by Dibrugarh police for allegedly assaulting Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members during a campus brawl.
Following the announcement of election results, the college union election at Dibru College in Dibrugarh devolved into a brawl between the AASU and the Assam Yuba Parishad, the youth wing of the AGP and AVBP, who reportedly battled with sharp weapons. By taking all of the injured to the Assam Medical College and Hospital, the police interfered and brought the situation under control (AMCH). When police entered Swahid Bhavan without notice, seizing 12 AASU activists, five of whom were eventually imprisoned, the situation grew considerably worse.
