The death of my beloved Maa, Namita Thakuria Mottak, who left for the heavenly adobe on August 30, left me with a feeling of dolefulness and guilt. The sorrow is due to the reality that I will not be cognizant of her blessings, assurances and endless love anymore, and the guilt because I did not prioritize her emotions and feelings before she was engulfed by the dreaded disease. But we had no way out but to accept the verdict of destiny.

Maa was born in Shillong in the year 1951 as our grandfather was posted there. Her father was Late Samindra Thakurai, a renowned police officer who served the department before as well as after Independence and was honoured with the President's Police Medal. She got married to Chakradhar Mottak, Superintendent (Retd) of Excise on October 22, 1972 in Guwahati.

Maa was a pious lady with active association with Shankar Sangha along with our father. A brilliant student in her school and college days, she had graduated in Philosophy (Honours) from Handique Girls' College. She had good talent in the literary field and wrote in different magazines and newspapers. She was a promising student in Rangia Girls High School.

Every about Maa was uncontrived .Whatever she picked up - be it fabulous recipes or the love of music - was done with simple joyfulness. In her company, it was impossible to not like anything that she liked. Whenever anyone of us was in trouble, she would come forward to be with us. She was adept in all household works, a good cook and an expert in knitting and embroidery. She was indispensable in any function of the family. She had an amiable nature.

We do not remember Maa raising her voice or reprimanding anyone, irrespective of how much trouble and grief that a person may have caused her. She was very strong with her decisions and choices and always motivated us to do the right thing.

She has left behind her husband and four children. She was so elegant in her dress sense and choice of colours. Her touch is everywhere in the house and there is prevailing now a vast emptiness everywhere.

With death, we often speak of the end of an era, of a deep void. These phrases are inadequate to describe our much-beloved Maa passing. Having freely given so much solace, kindness and cheer to all, she will surely find an endless abundance of the same in the hereafter. On this day of her adyashraddha, we wish her eternal bliss. Om Shanti!
