Wasted 22 Years In Congress: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma On Congress

GUWAHATI: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, said on Thursday that there had been "no ideological shift" when he switched from the Congress to the BJP and claimed that he had "wasted 22 years of my life" with the former political party.

"We used to worship families in the Congress. We worshipped the nation in the BJP " He stated in a conversation with the media. He was a former Assam Congress minister before departing in 2015 to become a minister and afterward the Chief Minister.

He supported several Hindutva ideas regarding riots and other crimes, including a "love jihad" interpretation of the purported murder of a Hindu woman, Shraddha Walkar, by her Muslim boyfriend, Aaftab Poonawala, in Delhi. He did this while adhering to the BJP line.

He argued, "The moment has come for us to define legally what is "love jihad"," and asserted, "We have numerous proof in our state," when questioned as to how he could come to such a conclusion when comparable crimes had been reported among all communities.

Additionally, he made veiled allusions to Muslims in an effort to place the blame for communal unrest on a certain group while claiming that "Hindus generally do not partake in rioting."

Regarding particular instances, such as court rulings in the 2002 Gujarat riots and the participation of individuals from various communities, he added, "I said that typically, Hindus are involved in riots. Hindus reject the concept of "jihad." Hindus are a peaceful people in general."

He turned to theatrics when asked if he could be making the same comments if he were still in Congress "What is the shift in ideology? Will Congress refute my claim that "Hindus are peace-loving"?"

CM Sarma claimed last month that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi resembles the late Iraqi dictator "Saddam Hussein" and that it would have been preferable for him to change his appearance to resemble Sardar Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, or Mahatma Gandhi.

Throughout his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Mr. Gandhi kept a lengthy beard. Mr. Sarma's reference to "Saddam Hussein" was taken as a jab at Mr. Gandhi and his party for engaging in what the BJP has long claimed to be Muslim appeasement politics.
