CM announces job for medal winners in National Games

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the Sports Pension Day function organized by the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare at Janata Bhawan here today.

Coinciding with the programme, the Chief Minister presented an appointment letter to gold medal winner in Commonwealth Games 2022 Nayanmoni Saikia in the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police and a cheque of Rs. 50 lakh as per State Sports Policy.

The Chief Minister also handed over one time financial assistance of Rs 50 thousand each to four sports persons and regular sports pension of Rs 10 thousand per month to another four sportspersons.

At the same function Sarma also presented Bir Chilarai award to outstanding NCC cadets of the state. The award carries a medal, certificate and Rs 25 thousand.

September 3 is the birth day of the first 'Arjun' of Assam Bhogeswar Baruah and the Sports and Youth Welfare Department has been celebrating the day as sports pension day from the last year.

Speaking on the occasion, Sarma said that Arjuna Bhogeswar Baruah laid the foundation of a glorious journey in the sporting arena of the state by winning a gold medal at the 1966 Asian Games. Following his footsteps, today young sportspersons of Assam have made a strong presence in the international sports events.

Lauding the achievement of gold medalist of Commonwealth Games Nayanmoni Saikia, the Chief Minister urged her to continue inspiring the young sportspersons. He also said that the State government took the step to honour the sportspersons of Assam who have excelled in international events with a view to motivate the younger generation to take up sports as a career.

The Chief Minister today announced that the state government will provide jobs to the medal winners of forthcoming National Games which will be held at Gujarat from September 27.

Underlining various steps taken for strengthening sports infrastructure Sarma said that another new stadium will be constructed at Chandrapur locality in the coming days besides augmenting infrastructure of Jorhat Stadium. Two High Performing Centres will also be set up at Amingaon in the city and at Jorhat with a cost of Rs 22 crore each.

The government is also planning to build Games Villages at Amingaon and Sarusajai to accommodate 250 players and coaches each one. Moreover, Sarma called upon the Assam Olympic Association and the Sports and Youth Welfare Department to take the initiative of promoting Indigenous Sports in the state and also recognize coaches and sports organizers.

Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Water Resources and IPRD Minister Pijush Hazarika, Handloom and Textiles Minister UG Brahma, Chief Secretary Paban Kumar Borthakur, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Additional Chief Secretary Maninder Singh and Ravi Shankar Prasad, PCCF MK Yadav, senior sports journalist Premadhar Sarma and several other dignitaries were present in the programme.

Recipient of one time financial grant (Rs 50,000 each): T Shyamolini Devi (Cachar), Rajani Deori (Dhemaji), Mani Kankana Dutta Baruah and Pallavi Dutta Baruah of Kamrup (Metro).

Recipient of regular sports pension (Rs 10,000 per month): Y Amrit Kanta Singha and Natum Singha (both from Cachar), Ranjit Rajkumar (Jorhat) and Mousumi Bhuyan (Kamrup Metro).

Recipient of Bir Chilarai Awards: Chinmoy Biswas, Sukanya Kashyap Mahanta, Biju Namasudra and Tanmoyee Shrutidhara Gogoi.
