IMPHAL: The wait is over. Flybig has started taking off in Manipur. The first flight from Tezu to Imphal was welcomed with a water cannon salute and a cultural show by Chief Minister N Biren Singh at the Bir Tikendrajit Airport on Monday. Flybig will operate in Guwahati-Tezu-Imphal-Tezu-Guwahati flights on all days except Monday on its ATR aircraft.

The Chief Minister said that under UDAN scheme, the state would have direct connectivity to the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh along with other north eastern states.

He said that these initiatives would lessen the distance among the people of the north eastern region. Further, he said that it would also help the state boost its trade and tourism fronts.

Singh hoped that the Imphal to Bangkok flight services via Guwahati will soon be a reality. The introduction of the direct flight to Bangkok would also be of a huge help.

In his address, Flybig CMD Sanjay Mandavia gave hint of another flight to connect Imphal with Kolkata via Silchar.

Welcoming the first flight Airport Director Rajesh Sinha said that reiterated their support to connect Imphal with the rest of the nation through air connectivity. He said that AAI Imphal was committed towards propelling the Regional Connectivity Scheme – UDAN in the Northeast.

State transport minister Kashim Vashum; works minister Govindas Konthoujam and state BJP president A Sarda Devi were prominent among those who were present in the brief function.

Flybig launched its services across the region from May last year. Initially, these flights were proposed to connect Guwahati, Rupsi, and Kolkata. Apart from these, Flybig's flights were set to connect Agartala, Dibrugarh, Tezu, and Pasighat.

The air passenger service provider started expanding rapidly since January last year. Shillong became yet another destination in the region after connecting Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura.
