Meghalaya CM Yet To Disburse PMAY Funds: Bernard Marak

SHILLONG: Bernard Marak, the vice president of the BJP and its spokesperson, has accused the Conrad Sangma-led MDA government of withholding funding intended for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) beneficiaries despite the fact that those individuals had already finished building their homes.

In an interview, this morning, Dipul Marak, a former NPP leader, and current GHADC Chief Executive Member claimed that the PMAY houses were sanctioned in 2016 and that, despite being completed, the current government was reluctant to disburse the remaining funds because doing so would reflect poorly on PM Narendra Modi and the BJP as a whole.

"Following my release, beneficiaries informed me that their house dues had not been paid. According to rumours and what the beneficiaries told us, their dues wouldn't be paid out until and unless they returned the NPP to power. I asked the office about it, and they told me that the government is halting these payments," Bernard stated.

He continued by saying that the concerned party felt that the BJP would gain from the beneficiaries receiving their just compensation. The leaders' perspective is incredibly limited if they believe that public initiatives that will help them are being removed and promoted as party-specific initiatives. The BJP will not tolerate this, said Marak.

Bernard noted that the issue of scholarship distribution has to be resolved immediately since while some students have already received them, others are still being turned down.

"In Garo Hills, the majority of the educational infrastructure is poor, and open positions go unfilled. Students are not receiving any of the amenities that are intended to be provided to them. The passing rate for high school pupils in Garo Hills is little about 30%. There is a need to focus on education, and if we win the election, we'll make sure that it starts with primary school and goes all the way to graduate school, he said.

According to sources, at Jengjal under the West Garo Hills today, some 500 BJP members gathered to welcome Dipul Marak, a former CEM who recently joined the party. Dipul is a ticket candidate from Rangsakona, where he will compete against Zenith Sangma of the TMC and Subir Marak of the NPP.
