Meghalaya: Gamchi Timre R Marak from Meghalaya on Monday received the "National Awards to Teachers" honour which according to her comes in as a hard-earned title for her and her lifetime achievement.

President of India, Droupadi Murmu conferred the award to Marak, along with 44 other awardees at the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The award comes to her for her contribution as the Head Teacher of Educere Higher Secondary School at Samanda in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills District, Meghalaya.

Speaking on the same, Marak stated that she is immensely happy with the achievement and honour is hard to achieve. She also emphasized on how difficult it is to receive the said award while sharing her story of influencing lives from a remote place.

"I am really very happy. This honour is not easy to get. It is a hard-earned honour and a lifetime achievement for me," she added.

Marak drew attention to the fact that William Nagar used to be an underdeveloped place. It has come a long way to its present developed state. According to Marak, education played a major role in this development.

Marak also added that Williamnagar used to be a backward area where the people were poor. The area included only a few educated people.

She then decided along with her husband to shift to the area on receiving a government job. They were presented with two options one of which was Williamnagar. Garo Hills needed Marak more and thus she chose to shift to the place.

Marak realized that the place was in need of education and this realization came to her through her experience in the social sector.

According to Marak, her involvement in NGOs made the people of the area look up to her.

''The place was in need of development and people to be educated. Eventually, the people wanted her to be a teacher and she opened a school,'' she said.
