Shillong: The Government of Meghalaya has taken over the land of Punjabi Lane locality in Shillong and decided to shift illegal settlers from there.

The Punjabi was in the headlines three years ago following group clashes.

Reportedly, the state government took possession of the 12,444.13 sq m from the local chieftain, after paying a sum of Rs 2 crore to the latter.

According to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, in this regard on March 31, a lease deed was also signed between the state government, chieftain locally known as the "Syiem of Hima Mylliem" and the Shillong Municipal Board.

The move came after a month when a High-Level Committee (HLC) which was set up to find a permanent solution submitted its report to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and later the government approved its recommendations.

The said lane which is under Iew Duh area of the Meghalaya capital is inhabited by people from Punjab. British brought these people to Shillong around 200 years ago for sanitary works.
