AIZAWL: The central government has decided to sanction Rs. 6664 crore to Mizoram in order to upgrade the road connectivity of the state.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Tuesday announced that, the Centre would soon sanction an amount Rs 6664 crore for various highway projects in the State.

In a political session at the Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoramthanga who is also the president of MNF mentioned about the proposal. Recently, Zoramthanga had attended a review meeting in Guwahati about the Northeast States on the construction of National Highways.

Nitin Gadkare, the Union Road Transport & Highway Minister was present in the meeting, where he announced about providing Rs. 6664 crores to Mizoram for the construction of various highway projects in the state by the Central Government. The agenda behind this is to strengthen the road connectivity of Mizoram, stated Zoramthanga.

The proposed projects include widening of a 28 km long national highway from Zorinpui to Longmasu, near Myanmar border. Four laning of 21 km long stretch between Vairengte and Sairang near Aizawl and widening of national highway between Seling and Tuivai near Manipur border.

Zoramthanga also assured that Nitin Gadkare would soon visit Mizoram in order to uncover two bridge projects. He also mentions that, the state is working on necessary steps to resolve the compensation issue along Vairengte-Sairang highway. The issues of the areca nut growers will also be resolved, states the CM.

It is worth noting that, more than 1500 land owners had staged protest in Mizoram to demand compensation for their lands taken away to widen the highways.

Zoramthanga further said that approximately 60,000 families are given financial assistance of Rs 50000 under the state flagship programme- Socio Economic Development Policy in the current fiscal. Along with this, 600 families will be provided financial assistance by SEDP.
