Mizoram Declares 1875 Notification as Base for Border Settlement With Assam
Mizoram decides that they will follow the notification issued in 1875 to resolve the land dispute with Assam
MIZORAM : Mizoram home minister Lalchamliana stated that the state delegates made it clear during talks with Assam team that Mizoram stood by the notification issued in 1875 under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, to resolve the boundary issues.
The Assam delegate Atul Bora suggested Mizoram to furnish list of villages and their areas, geospatical extent and ethnicity of the people and other important information within a time period of three months. Lalchamliana added that, the state will gather all the requirements to support the claim within three months.
The Mizoram government has always stood by the notification issued by the Governor-in-council of the then British government in 1875 which did not allow citizens of the British India to enter the Lushai country by crossing a certain demarcation. The demarcation was the inner line of the Inner Line Reserve Forest, which the Mizoram government decided should be the basis for demarcation of the border. But it differed from the Assam government's demarcated boundary between Assam and Lushai hills.
This notification was issued by the former chief secretary WA Cosgrave in 1933. During the independence in 1947, the border issue was not there and the Lushai hills became a district of Assam from 1952. Though the Northeast Recognition Act 1971 mentioned that the boundary of the Mizoram Union Territory would be the boundary of the Mizo district. There was no demarcation which resulted in claims and counter claims between Assam and Mizoram.
On 26th of July 2021, the boundary dispute gave rise to a bloody confrontation between two police personnel from the two states. The dispute between Assam and Mizoram took its worst turn when five Assam police personnel and one civilian died during the clash. Mizoram police used light machine guns on Assam police. Mizoram CM Zoramthanga regretted injuries in both the sides.
