Nagaland's 30% Population Consumes Drugs: DGP Rupin Sharma

DIMAPUR : The Nagaland Director-General of Police (prisons, home guards and civil defence), Rupin Sharma made a shocking revelation when he stated that nearly 30 per cent of the state's population consumes drugs.
DGP Sharma made the statement while speaking at the annual inter-school sports meet of the Dimapur unit of the All Nagaland Private Schools' Association (ANPSA) at the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School.
Expressing concern over the high intake of drugs in the state, Sharma specifically mentioned that a lot of children are also under the influence of drugs and urged the students to inform their teachers or the police if they know anyone who are into drugs.
At the same time, Sharma also advised the school management authorities and ANPSA to jointly formulate a standard procedure in order to place a support system to deal with the students who are suffering from drug addiction.
Moreover, he focused on the need to come up with better programmes in such a way that the menace of drugs among students could be kept in check.
"We should try to rectify them and not punish them," he added, speaking in favour of treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts instead of ostracizing them or doling out punishment.
Further, he emphasized that schools are not only about learning but also about "unlearning and learning afresh some things."
'Drug addiction' among youths is a major concern in Nagaland. The state is among the top 10 in India whose percentage of population are severely affected by drug abuse.
Such a complex drug problem in the state is largely attributed to the North-East region's close proximity to the two largest drug producing regions in the world - the Golden Crescent and the Golden Triangle.
Nagaland is not only in the route for drugs to be smuggled to neighbouring Assam and further on, to the rest of the country, but has also turned into a destination for drugs like heroin and methamphetamine tablets like Yaba.
