World Bank's ELEMENT Project to Help Nagaland Deal With Climate Change
The World Bank has decided to assist Nagaland in dealing with climate change through the Enhancing Landscape and Ecosystem Management (ELEMENT) project
KOHIMA : In order to restore and strengthen the landscapes in Nagaland, the World Bank is in a four day mission with 12 members. The World Bank has formed a 12-member team in order to assist Nagaland to deal with the climate change and provide support to scientific farming. The project estimation is around Rs. 647 crore, and 89% is funded by the World Bank, the rest 20% is state shared.
The prime motive is to empower the communities of Nagaland to undertake scientific decisions to deal with the climatic change, local economy, biodiversity and improve ecosystem services. The pillars of the project would basically focus on adopting the climate smart models that would protect the community forest and green growth.
According to the statement of senior state government, the team arrived in Kohima on Sunday, and has already conducted meetings with the Nagaland government officials. The team initiated meeting with the Land Resources Department and also visited the GIS campus. The World Bank team had a series of meeting with the central committee and technical committee in regards to the implementation of the 'Enhancing Landscape and Ecosystem Management' (ELEMENT) project on Monday.
Y. Kikheto Sema, the Nagaland Agriculture Production Commissioner, described to the World Bank team everything about the agricultural structure and various farming patterns of the state. The team deliberated on the overview, scope, preparedness, government approval, rationale,economic analysis, DEA readiness filter and timelines of the ELEMENT project, funded by the World Bank.
The team is divided into a group of two, in order to cover more areas. They would visit the 'Jhum' field of Chiechama (Slash and Burn method of farming), Naga Integrated Settled Farming- NISF project at Boke-Botsa, Sendenyu Community Biodiversity Reserve, Khonoma and terrace field, traditional agroforestry field, and biodiversity conserved areas in Dzuleke on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, they would conduct a meeting with the Nagaland Chief Secretary J. alam. Along with this, the World Bank team would also discuss about the important issues with the environment, forest and climate change, agricultural and allied departments.
Before leaving Nagaland on Thursday the team has planned to visit the Nagaland Bamboo Mission, Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission and the organic market at Chumoukedima.
