GANGTOK: Sikkim now has 6 districts with the addition of Pakyong and Soreng, carved out of the existing East and West Sikkim districts.

The four previous districts have been renamed as well. North Sikkim has been renamed as Mangan, West Sikkim as Gyalshing, East Sikkim renamed as Gangtok and South Sikkim as Namchi.

Earlier on the third and final day of the Fifth Session of the 10th Assembly, the Sikkim Legislative Assembly voted for the creation of 2 new districts of Pakyong and Soreng, carved out of the existing East and West Sikkim districts.

Notably, the Nagaland government also added three more districts in its total number of districts in the state. Now there are 15 districts in the northeastern state of Nagaland s declared by the state cabinet on Saturday 18 December.

The major announcement regarding the formation of new and fresh districts was made by the State cabinet on Saturday in Kohima.

The newly formed districts of Nagaland are Niuland, Tseminyu and Chumukedima. Tseminyu district was created by bifurcating Kohima while Tseminyu and Chumukedima were carved out of the district of Dimapur.

On the other hand, in Assam, Tamulpur has been proposed by the Assam Government to become a new district in the state of Assam.

This major initiative has been undertaken by the government as a crucial step towards facilitating good governance in the state.

The creation of the new district of Tamulpur will further improve economic activity and aid in better administrative control.

Tamulpur is currently a subdivision of the Baksa district under the BTC. The existing four districts under the BTC are—Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri and Baksa.
