GUWAHATI: New sensation of Indian badminton Lakshya Sen is in the city to participate the PSPB Inter Unit Badminton Championship. In a brief chat with The Sentinel, he shared his views on various issues. Here is the excerpt.

TS: How did you get into badminton?

Lakshya: Both my grandfather and father were associated with this game. My grandfather was a badminton player, and my father is a coach. So I was introduced to the game at a very early stage of my life. Once I started doing well at junior tournaments, I decided to continue the game.

TS: You are only 21. You have already won major titles like Commonwealth Games, Thomas Cup etc. How have you made it possible?

Lakshya: It was not in my mind to win Commonwealth Games, Thomas cup titles etc. when I started to play the game. The old habit continues. I always focus on developing my game and give more and more time to it.

TS: Recently, you have won two major titles- Commonwealth Games and Thomas Cup. Which one is more memorable?

Lakshya: It is the Thomas Cup. In a competition like the Commonwealth Games, success depends on the particular player. If he plays well, he can win. But it is not the same in tournaments like the Thomas Cup. It is a team competition, and all players have to contribute equally to lift the title.

TS: How do you see the future of Indian badminton?

Lakshya: I feel it is bright. Our win in the Thomas Cup has proved that we have quality senior players dominating the international circuit. Our reserve bench is also quite good.

TS: Share your experience working with legendary shuttler Prakash Padukone.

Lakshya: Oh, it's great. Sir always encourages me to stay focused on the game. He also advised me not to think much about the game but to try to do better and better through regular practice.

TS: Share your views on BAI's role in the game.

Lakshya: BAI is always supporting the players in various ways. After Himanta Biswa Sarma sir took charge as BAI president, he tried to bring several changes to the association to make it more player-friendly.
