GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Food and Civil Supplies has deleted the names of 40 lakh beneficiaries from the ration card database from May to August-end this year. The deleted names are of dead persons, ineligible persons, duplicates and bogus beneficiaries.

The Directorate of Food and Civil Supplies has done this Herculean task under the supervision of the State Government. With this deletion of names, the government saved the food grains allotted against the 40 lakh ineligible beneficiaries. Now the government can include new eligible beneficiaries in the ration card database.

Talking to The Sentinel, Director of Food and Civil Supplies Ankur Bharali said, "Deletion and addition of names of ration card beneficiaries is a continuous process. From May this year, we have intensified the monitoring system and struck 40 lakh names of ineligible beneficiaries from the ration card database. The recent Aadhaar seeding with ration cards has helped us to a great extent in detecting ineligible beneficiaries."

So far, the state has 97 per cent of 57 lakh ration cards Aadhar seeded. It is 89 per cent of the total ration card beneficiaries of the state, numbering around 2.51 crore.

According to sources, the government will take a policy decision soon to or not to allow food grains against ration card beneficiaries who have not yet Aadhaar seeded their cards. A source said that the government would hold the allotment of food grains against such beneficiaries till they Aadhaar-seed their ration cards.
