ASSAM CABINET DECISIONS: District police accountability authorities soon

KOKRAJHAR/GUWAHATI: The State Cabinet has decided to set up district police accountability authorities in all districts. It also decided to upgrade Bodo as the medium of instruction up to class XII.

Addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "The Cabinet decided to set up the office of district police accountability authority in each district. It will enable the public to lodge complaints against misuse of power by police officials, if any, at the district level. If the district-level police accountability authorities find any police officials misusing power, they will recommend such complaints to the State government for necessary action."

The Cabinet took several decisions concerning the BTR. The Chief Minister said, "The Cabinet decided to permit the BTC to provincialize ten colleges in the BTR. The Cabinet decided to de-reserve the post of Bodo language teachers in the colleges in the BTR to overcome the shortage of applicants for such posts. Currently, only ST candidates can apply for such posts in the BTR. Students having requisite qualifications, irrespective of their castes, can now onward apply for the post of Bodo language teacher in colleges. The Cabinet also decided to release Rs 500 crore under CM's Goodwill Projects for roads and bridges in the BTR in the coming two years. This Rs 500 crore is over and above the already announced Rs 500 crore for roads and bridges in the BTR."

On Bodo medium schools, the Chief Minister said, "In BTR, Bodo is the medium of instruction up to Class X. The Cabinet today decided to upgrade it up to Class XII."

The last Cabinet meeting decided to repeal over 300 obsolete Acts prevalent in the State. The Chief Minister said, "Today we decided to repeal 48 other obsolete Acts that are redundant now."

The Chief Minister said, "A part of an effort to correlate education with Indian classical tradition and value system, Auni Ati University is to be set up at Kaliapani Xatra, Teok in the |Jorhat district under the Assam Private Universities Act, 2007."

The Chief Minister said, "The Cabinet today discussed some other issues regarding the Chintan Shivir of the State Government slated for September 24, 25 and 26. We are contemplating setting up a new forest battalion, filling up 5,000 vacant posts in APDCL, etc."
