SILCHAR: The Cachar police has arrested a medical sales representative on the charge of smuggling contraband narcotic substances. Subimal Paul (31), a resident of Sonai Road area, allegedly used his sales representative profession as a shield to run a chain of smuggling Yaba tablets procured from Myanmar via Mizoram.

Police on Friday night arrested Paul and he had been sent to judicial custody.

Last week police arrested three persons, all residents of Mizoram, from a hotel in Sonai Road. 10,000 Yaba tablets, wrapped in polythene sheets, and some Myanmarese currency were recovered from their possession. During interrogation the Mizo smugglers confessed that the consignment of contraband substances was to be delivered to Subimal Paul. Subsequently police arrested Paul.

Sources said that due to his profession, Paul made frequent visits to Mizoram, particularly the Champhai district which shares border with Myanmar. A section of locals of Champhai, including women, were actively associated with the illegal trade. They used to purchase 10,000 Yaba tablets for Rs 5 lakh and sell these at Rs 7-8 lakh in Silchar. Subimal got involved in the illegal trading as he used to tour Champhai regularly. Consignments of contraband substances were delivered to him and he used to send them, wrapped in small packets, to other parts of the country and even to Bangladesh.

The arrest of Subimal Paul is a major success as it may lead to some other persons involved in the racket in Silchar town.
