TEZPUR: Dr Pradip Kumar Lahkar, Medical Inspector of Plantations (MIP), Tezpur filed cases under the Plantations Labour Act, 1951 against the employers of Ghoirali and Sessa Tea Estates in the Sonitpur district. Both the gardens are under the Apeejay group.

Talking to The Sentinel, Dr Lahkar said that the Ghoirali and Sessa tea gardens failed to appoint an adequate number of medical and paramedical staff after giving show-cause notice, adding that most of the tea gardens under the Apeejay group in Assam even failed to give regular wages to the workers and staff. However, the Labour Department is taking all initiatives for giving regular wages to the workers and staff.

Dr Lahkar directed all the tea garden managers of the Sonitpur district to appoint the required number of medical and paramedical staff immediately. Dr Lahkar also directed all tea garden managers of the Sonitpur district to take all precautionary measures against water-borne and vector-borne diseases. He advised them to take an active part in Covid vaccination. He urged the management association to advise member gardens to take an active part in wage compensation schemes for pregnant women to reduce maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rates.

Dr Lahkar also issued a show-cause notice to employers of Sapoi tea garden for not providing adequate medical facilities in the garden. A case against employers of Sapoi tea estate is going on in the CJM court of Tezpur, he added.
