Clear vision hallmark of a leader: Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

GUWAHATI: Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has underscored that each person in positions of leadership, be it as minister and MLA or as a bureaucrat, must have a clear vision and the ability to translate that vision into reality. Clear vision is the hallmark of a true leader, he said

Speaking on the second day of the three-day Chintan Shivir of the State government at Kaziranga on Sunday, Ravi Shankar said that it is up to every political leader and officer to decide what type of impact they want to leave behind upon society – positive or negative.

In this context, Ravi Shankar said that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has both leadership qualities and vision.

"Sarma is concerned not only about Assam, but he is equally concerned about the rest of the Northeast. He has played an important role in bringing militant back to the mainstream. I too have had many discussions with the ULFA and it is my belief that many militants will give up arms and return to the mainstream if we talk to them," Ravi Shankar added.

He said that the people of Assam are very peace-loving, but the local farmers are such that they are content with harvesting one crop in a year. "They must be brought out of this mindset and encouraged to take up multi-crop cultivation. The government must motivate them in this regard," he said.

Ravi Shankar urged all officers to work as a team and also maintain constant communication with their subordinates in order to motivate them to work harder. He said that senior officers should be open to ideas because even a low-level employee may have sound ideas about specific things. He said that there are three types of people in every sphere – excellent, mediocre and hopeless. Therefore, he said, work must be accomplished through appropriate coordination when it comes to delegation of responsibility.

The spiritual guru laid emphasis on meditation as a tool for improving focus and urged each individual to meditate for five minutes before starting work. Those who work in offices should also take a short break and meditate between two halves of working hours to prevent low-energy levels towards the end of office hours, Ravi Shankar said.
