 Shoddy embankment restoration works

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Anomalies taking place in the name of restoration of embankments damaged by floods in the state came to the fore today. The Department of Water Resources suspended six employees, including an assistant executive engineer and a junior engineer of the Demow Subdivision. The department also blacklisted the contractor who did the work.

The department was restoring a breached embankment in the Thowra LAC. The contractor used most of the sandbags filled with empty sandbags. Some other sandbags used were not filled with an adequate quantity of soil and sand.

Soon after the shoddy work came to the fore, Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika ordered an inquiry. Based on the inquiry report, the Demow Water Resources Subdivision suspended its Assistant Executive Engineer Dinesh Burhagohain, Sivasagar Water Resources Division's junior engineer Tarun Sonowal, assistant engineer Thanuram Borgohain, sectional assistant Dhrubajyoti Chetia and two others.

Sources said such poor embankment restoration works are going on at many other places in the state with nexuses between some officials and contractors. Some contractors often do shoddy work taking advantage of restoration works after floods. "It is not possible for a minister and a commissioner to see every work taking place in the field. The responsibility to see such works in the field lies with engineers and others who make field visits. Due to nexus between officials and contractors, the public goes down the drain," a source in the department said.
