GUWAHATI: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has urged the Assam Government to accelerate the implementation of schemes meant for minority communities in the state.

NCM member Syed Shahezadi visited the state for three days to take stock of the social, economic and educational status of the minority community. She met Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday.

Shahezadi emphasized the constitution of the Assam Minority Development and Finance Corporation Ltd, Assam State Commission for Minority and the Assam Wakf Board, besides making the Assam Minority Development Board a full-fledged one. The board only has the chairman and the vice chairman, but no members.

Talking to the media today, Syed Shahezadi said, "I met officials, spiritual leaders and the state minority development board during the visit. In my meeting with the Chief Minister yesterday, I told him that the work done for the welfare of minorities in the state is satisfactory, but there is a need to speed it up. The Chief Minister responded positively."

Shahezadi stressed awareness about the schemes for minorities. She underlined the role of spiritual leaders and media in this regard.

She said a WhatsApp group of spiritual leaders of minority communities is under formation. Religious and other institutions can bring about awareness of welfare schemes. "I raised the pre-matric scholarship scam in the state during the meeting with the Chief Minister. I urged the State government to ensure that genuine students do not suffer," Shahezadi said.

She added, "The district education officers, district magistrates and bank officers concerned will be responsible for any such future scam."

"I will write to the Chief Secretary regarding all issues brought to our notice," she added.

Ministry of Minority Affairs sanctioned 1,39,678 projects under Multi-Sectoral Development Programmes (MSDP) renamed Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) worth Rs 2,227 crore for Assam from 2008-09, she said.
