GUWAHATI: The Assam Police will take the Indian Army's assistance to train the newly-recruited police commandos, who will be part of five new battalions in the state.
This was disclosed by Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Sunday while addressing the media in connection with declaration of the list of 5,200 candidates who have been selected for various posts under Assam Police, as against a total of 5,262 vacant posts. These include 707 women recruits.
The DGP said that the Army will train the commandos at their bases as per Assam Police's norms. He said that a recently-retired brigadier of the Assam Regiment of the Army has been already appointed as a Special Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Assam Police. A scientifically-oriented training programme has been developed with the help of the retired brigadier to train the new commandos.
Mahanta said that in accordance with discussions with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, he had previously discussed the issue of imparting Army training to Assam Police's commandos with incumbent Army Chief General Pande and Lieutenant General Rana Pratap Kalita.
The DGP said that the recruitment process of the new policemen was totally clean and transparent. "Those selected have been selected absolutely on their own merit and without any fear or favour."
The Chief Minister monitored every step of the recruitment process, the DGP added.
It may be mentioned that the Assam Police on Sunday announced the list of 306 Sub-Inspectors (Unarmed Branch) ; 278 Sub-Inspectors (Armed Branch) for five newly-created Assam Commando Battalions, against 320 posts; 2,134 constables (for both Armed Branch and Unarmed Branch); 2,442 constables (Armed Branch) for the five newly-created Assam Commando Battalions, against 2,450 posts; nine Assistant Deputy Controller Civil Defence (Junior), against 10 posts; and 31 Civil Defence Demonstrators/PBX Operators /Wireless Operators under DGCD & CGHG, against 42 posts.
The new recruits will receive their appointment letters at the Khanapara field on September 22, the DGP said.
