Once a hilly barren land is now a 300-acre forest in Manipur. All thanks to Moirangthem Loiya. 47-year old Loiya belongs to Uripok Khaidem Leikai of Imphal West District. An ardent nature lover, he graduated from a college in Chennai in 2000. On his visit to Koubru hill ranges, he was shocked by the large-scale deforestation. Jhum cultivation for several years had turned the land barren. Visited 'Punshilok Maru' in the Imphal outskirts. Came up with this ambitious plan

Loiya has transformed the hilly barren plot into a 300-acre forest area. On the outskirts of Manipur's capital Imphal on the Langol Hill Range. All within a 20-year time frame. Forest houses over 100 species of plants, with 25 varieties of bamboo alone. Also, home to barking deers, porcupines and snakes. Manipur's Forest Department has too supported Loiya in his endeavour. Moirangthem Loiya is also the Founder of the Wild Life and Habitat Protection Society (WAHPS). WAHPS is actively involved in preserving the forest. Loiya says that growing & nurturing the Punshilok forest will remain his lifelong mission
