GUWAHATI: Guwahati has seen an increase in the number of contraband narcotics being captured across the city and the number of peddlers being arrested in connection with such materials. Although the state police have been issuing warnings and conducting operations time and again, they hardly seem to be in control of the situation in terms of narcotics, especially in the capital city.

The consumption of such substances by themselves poses several risks to the well-being of a person, but apart from those direct health concerns, there are several other problems associated with such habits. These include the chances of contracting several illnesses that require the exchange of body fluids like blood for propagation. And one of the highest-risk developments in such cases is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV.

Those consuming narcotics through intravenous systems have been seen using the same syringes or other materials on multiple people. Sometimes these are done to cut costs, while at other times, these actions are taken simply because of a lack of other options at the time of consumption of the narcotic substance. But whatever the reason, these instances increase the chances of contracting serious illnesses like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, etc.

Officials with the Assam State AIDS Control Society pointed out an increase in the number of HIV/AIDS cases detected in the city in the post-COVID period. They also attributed this sudden surge to cases of narcotic use, especially through an intravenous system using a syringe. They pointed out that the sharing of the equipment used for preparing the narcotics for consumption is also a major problem. Although several agencies and organisations are working hard to spread awareness against the use of such narcotic substances, it remains to be seen when people actually consuming those substances pay heed to these agencies, and till then, they continue to put their lives as well as those of others in danger.
