India Meteorological Department Celebrates 150th Foundation Day

GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) celebrated its 150th foundation day on January 15. IMD was established in 1875 to coordinate, combine, and extend the work of various provisional authorities by making arrangements with administrative and medical officers of various districts for noting temperature, pressure, and rainfall.

The programme started with an inaugural speech by Dr. Sanjay O'Neill Shaw at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati. Scientist F. Dr. Shaw congratulated all the officials of IMD Guwahati on the 150th foundation day of IMD. He thanked them for their efforts in completing IMD's 150-year glorious journey. Suprakash Chakraborty, Scientific Officer, and Sailen Saikia, Scientific Officer, highlighted various services rendered by IMD.

An exhibition was organized in the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, depicting meteorological instruments and IMD services for public viewing and a popular lecture for students. Sunit Das, Scientist-F, offered a vote of thanks. The Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, was established on April 1, 1997. From January 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025, a number of activities throughout the year have been planned by IMD, stated a press release.
