GUWAHATI: Following the traditions dating back centuries, the people of Assam celebrated Magh, or Bhogali Bihu, with enthusiasm and fervour.
Today is the first day of the Assamese 'Magh' month, and many people lit up meji this morning, like a section of people did at dawn yesterday.
A significant difference in this year's Magh Bihu is the return of the traditional buffalo and bulbuli bird fights after a gap of nine years. The traditional events were put on hold by the authorities, citing different reasons, including a legal imbroglio.
At Ahatguri in Morigaon district, buffalo fights attracted huge crowds. The traditional event was inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Expressing his happiness to be present at the occasion on the first day of 'Magh', the CM said, "The people should enjoy the spectacle, but the SOP issued by the government should be followed. It should also be ensured that no animal is harmed during the fights."
The chief minister also briefly spoke on the history of the buffalo and bulbuli fights.
At Hajo in Kamrup district, a Monikut Utsav and Sammanay Sobhayatra were organized by the Hajo unit of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU). The Samannay yatra is a symbol of the harmony and well-being that exist between the different communities. It started in Powa Mecca and ended in the Hayagriva Madhab Mandir.
In the last two days, various events were organized, including traditional sports and cultural events, at different places in the state.
Rangamati Sports Club near Bijoynagar in Kamrup district also organized several activities, including the felicitation of senior citizens and renowned personalities of the area.
