OBITUARY: Pabindra Dutta Choudhury

Pabindra Dutta Choudhury, a retired hotelier and ex-director of Bellevue Hotel, passed away at a city hospital in Guwahati around 5 p.m. on January 14 at the age of 77. His death has cast a gloom on his large group of admirers, friends, and relatives. He had completed his schooling and college in St. Edmund's, Shillong. Later, he came down to do his masters in English at Gauhati University. He had gone on a training course with Oberoi Hotels in 1976. Earlier, in Shillong, he had closely watched his late parents, Jatin and Labanya Dutta Choudhury, manage the Pinewood Hotel. This experience had helped him imbibe all the qualities needed to succeed in the hospitality service industry.

With his endearing good manners and qualities, he was popularly called 'Opu' by everyone who came into contact with him. Opu had the unique quality of listening to all who approached him with any problem, extending his help and advice with an ever-smiling face. The large attendance by all his relatives, friends, and well-wishers at the Navagraha crematorium for his last rites was a testimony to his stature. He was closely attached to the Freemasons and was also an active member of St. Edmund's Past Pupils' Association, where he is a legend for the contributions he made over the years. He loved reading and listening to music in his spare time and was also an English classical movie buff. He loved tracing back his roots and was contemplating writing a small book on his origins and ancestors, some of whom had very interesting experiences. He has left behind his wife, Audrey Sangi Chuauhang, with whom he has spent a lifetime of almost 50 years with golden memories.
