ITANAGAR: In a major setback to the Janata Dal United (JD(U) in Arunachal Pradesh, the party's lone party MLA on Wednesday switched sides to the saffron brigade, pushing the strength of the ruling BJP in the 60-member House to 49.

State Assembly Deputy Speaker Tesam Pongte accepted the merger of the JD(U) MLA Techi Kaso, who represents the Itanagar Assembly Constituency, with the BJP.

A bulletin issued by the Deputy Speaker informed about the merger of Kaso with the BJP.

The JD(U), led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, won seven of the 15 seats it contested in the 2019 Assembly elections and emerged as the second-largest party after the BJP, which had bagged 41 seats. However, in December 25, 2020, six of its MLA joined the BJP.

The six JD(U) MLAs who joined the BJP earlier included Talem Taboh from Rumgong Assembly constituency, Hayeng Mangfi (Chayang Tajo), Jikke Tako (Tali), Dorjee Wangdi Kharma (Kalaktang), Dongru Siongju (Bomdila) and Kanggong Taku from Mariyang-Geku constituency.

The NCP and the Congress in 2019 won four seats each while the regional People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) emerged victorious in one seat. However, the PPA MLA Kardo Nyigyor, representing Lilabali constituency, later joined the BJP. With the merger of the JD(U) member, the BJP in the State has 49 MLAs, while Opposition Congress and NPP have four MLAs each, including three Independents.

The three Independents are also associate members of the ruling party while the NPP is an ally of the saffron party.
