GOLAGHAT: An Asiatic Back Bear which was triggering terror among the residents of the Jelehua Village in the Dergoan region of the Golaghat Forest Division was finally brought under control by the forest department. The wild animal had been roaming around in the area for the past two weeks, triggering fears of untoward incidents among the local people.

The local people had reported the movement of a wild bear in the areas near the Jelehua village in the Dergaon locality over the past few days to the forest department officials. Officials from the Golaghat Forest Division made the necessary arrangements to capture the wild animal which had been the cause of panic. They set up a cage as a trap and used 15 chickens from a nearby broiler chicken farm as bait.

After a long search and with tracking and multiple attempts to trap the wild animal, the officials were finally able to tranquilise and rescue the animal from the village. It is expected that the animal will be released in a nearby forest area.

Man-animal conflicts continue to be a major cause of concern across the state of Assam. Some villages of the Golaghat district are the newest victims of the wild elephant herds raiding the fields in the region. In the failure of the forest department, local people have started to risk their lives to chase away the elephants from the paddy fields. A recent video that came out from the Morangi locality of the Golaghat district of the state that has gone viral on social media shows three people desperately trying to chase away an elephant from a paddy field. The elephant is also seen charging at the people involved in the incident. A large herd is also seen waiting at a small distance in the fog-covered field in the direction. However, neither the animal nor the humans were seen to be injured in this incident.
