GUWAHATI : Better traffic movement in the city continues to be a distant dream, as the features of Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) are yet to become fully functional in Guwahati. The ITMS was installed in the state four months back with its characteristics such as - auto detection of traffic rule violations by the public and auto generation of e- challan or electronic challan.

The system was started in 23rd August under Smart City projects. The control room of ITMS is located in Ulubari, right above the office of the DCP and Guwahati Police is responsible for its functioning.

The system was launched by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to control and manage the traffic from ITMS control room. However, the violation of traffic rules and traffic congestion are increasing every day around the city. This is a result of failure of the concerned department to bring the full features of ITMS to life.

The police claimed that the delay has been caused due to some sort of software related issues.

Traffic violations that are usually seen in the city include stopping of vehicles on zebra crossing, triple riding on two- wheelers, not wearing helmets, non- usage of seatbelts in cars, using mobile phones while driving, and others. The ITMS is supposed to track such violations.

The ITMS is envisaged as an integrated mechanism to check on violations and facilitate in seamless traffic movement. In the first phase, the area starting from Nepali Mandir to Khanapara was sought to be covered, providing the traffic control system in 20 junctions.

A total of 94 junctions will be covered in the final phase. The project ensured live monitoring of vehicles through CCTV surveillance, live alerts after an accident or any such incident, which are done through video analytics. These video analytics are also expected to keep a check on suspicious activities and vehicles.
